STALKER 2's Cost of Hope expansion, and its free but still hopeful 2.0 update, get an August release date

Grab your Geiger counter and your copy of The Arbinger Institute’s seminal conflict resolution handbook The Anatomy of Peace, because STALKER 2’s faction war-y story expansion Cost of Hope has a release date. It’s out on August 20th, developers GSC Game World have announced, and will launch in tandem with the long-awaited Update 2.0 – which, among other tweaks, will move the base game over to a newer, less technically perilous version of Unreal Engine 5.

That’ll be free for everyone, while Cost of Hope serves as a premium DLC venture into Chornobyl’s infamous power plant, amid the backdrop of a Fleetwood Mac-tier falling out between STALKER’s oldest on-again/off-again rivals Freedom and Duty. Since Cost of Hope was announced back in March, we’ve mainly just seen brief glimpses of the CNPP through screenshots (and a series of in-universe history snippets posted on the game’s Steam news page). All the same, we know the plant hasn’t become any more welcoming since it was last visitable in 2008’s STALKER: Clear Sky, with at least one new mutant type – an armoured humanoid berserker – seemingly very keen indeed to punch your gasmasked lights out.

Also, not to lower any bars or anything, but an August 20th release date does mean that Cost of Hope is arriving within the Summer 2026 window that GSC originally announced. An improvement, you could say, when STALKER 2 itself showed up 14 years later than intended.

Update 2.0 sounds promising too. Along with rumoured further improvements to STALKER 2’s A-Life system for simulating ambient NPC behaviour, the big under-the-hood change comes by way of swapping Unreal Engine 5.1 for Unreal Engine 5.5. In theory, this could drastically improve performance, spruce up certain lighting effects, reduce visual noise effects, and help with some of game’s lingering stability issues.

Or, it could break everything again, shattering into a thousand radioactive pieces the technical solidity that a year and a half of patches had successfully built up. Either way, I’m down. STALKER 2 launched like it was held together by elastic bands and spit, yet I enjoyed wandering its wastes so much that every squished bug and crash fix thereafter just felt like a bonus. Refreshing the entire engine? Well now, that’s just a particularly big bonus.
