She told her Patrick that she was on Zoloft, a common antidepressant medication, in September 2022.

According to her defense lawyers, she had been prescribed at least six different medications by a handful of different doctors. They included:

• Zoloft, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) usually prescribed for depression and anxiety
• Ativan, a benzodiazepine usually given for anxiety and short-term anxiety relief
• Lorazepam, a generic version of Ativan
• Zolpidem, a sleeping medication also known as Ambien
• Diazepam, a benzodiazepine also known as Valium, usually given for anxiety
• Trazodone, a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI), given for depression

Still, Clancy “kept getting worse and worse,” Patrick recalled about that time period — despite the family employing a nanny to help care for the children throughout the week. 

The family had hired a nanny who worked about 12 hours a week and helped with childcare and household chores, he testified.

Patrick struggled to recall which drug was which when prosecutor Jennifer Sprague went through the list of meds his wife was prescribed at the time, and asked what he knew about her consumption of the medications.

“I wasn’t keeping track of the number of pills taken out of each bottle,” he said.

“There were a lot of pills prescribed, but not a lot of pills taken, correct?” Sprague said.

“It’s possible that not a lot were taken,” Patrick responded.
