Statistics Day

The vital role data systems play in public policy and national development was highlighted at a seminar on “Unlocking the potential of administrative data,” held as part of the 20th National Statistics Day at the National College. The event, organised by the Department of Statistics in collaboration with National Statistical Office (NSO), Sub-Regional Office, Tiruchi, feature a quiz competition too. K.N. Rajeev Kumar, assistant director, and N. Ramesh, Senior Statistical officer, NSO, shared critical insights on utilising administrative records to streamline statistical research and governance. Students were administered a pledge on ethical data practices and the role of statistics in government and innovation.

AI and ML training

A 45-day intensive skill development orientation programme on ‘Artificial intelligence and machine learning using Python’ organised by Valluvar College of Science and Management, Karur, in collaboration with IIT-Madras Pravartak got under way on Monday. Ramya Vasudevan, Senior Program Manager, IIT-Madras Pravartak, shared insights on the importance of upskilling in the current digital landscape and gave guidelines and provided an overview of the curriculum to the participants.

Raman Narasimhan, Senior Consultant, elaborated on the practical applications of AI/ML in modern industry. The course was designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of AI/ML concepts through practical sessions and hands-on experience. The initiative was aimed at bridging the gap between traditional academics and the rapidly evolving demands of the tech industry, said K. Senguttuvan, Chairman, Valluvar Group.

Bridging digital divide

A conference on bridging the digital divide for sustainable development organised recently by School of Mathematical, Computational and Information Sciences, PG Department of Library and Information Science, and Library, Holy Cross College Tiruchi, in collaboration with the Academic Library Association (ALA), Tamil Nadu, featured keynote and invited lectures by eminent scholars.

The conference received more than 100 research papers from India and abroad, of which 48 papers were presented physically and 30 papers were presented online. The technical sessions covered themes such as digital inclusion, information literacy, artificial intelligence, sustainable development, research analytics, and modern library services.

A special highlight was the retirement felicitation ceremony for S. Srinivasaragavan, senior professor and founder head, Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University (BDU).

Interview training

V. Arulmurugan, associate professor and head, Department of Commerce, and Coordinator, Karaikal Campus, Pondicherry University, delivered an insightful session on interview skills during a pre-placement training programme conducted for the final-year students of Government Women’s Polytechnic College, Karaikal, recently. He explained the significance of self-introduction, communication skills, body language, resume preparation, group discussions, and professional conduct during interviews.

Adding value to food

Value addition in food processing was the focus of a guest lecture conducted by PG and Research Department of Biochemistry, J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukkottai, recently. Invited speaker N. Baskaran, Assistant Professor, NIFTEM-T, Thanjavur, explained the importance of developing nutrient-rich functional foods from traditional resources in his address.

Convocation

Mawlavi Mufti Muhammad Noorul Haque Rashadi Khasimi Sahib spoke on the salient features of Muslim law during his address at the 15th Muballiga held by AIMAN College for Arts and Science for Women in collaboration with Unis Academy, Chennai, recently. A total of 175 students were awarded the Muballiga (Islamic studies for women) degree. Kazi A. M. M. Kadar Bux Hussain Siddiqui spoke.
