It’s about dam time.

According to a news release from the Bureau of Reclamation, the Hoover Dam will fully reopen on Friday.

Since Monday, it has been closed to visitors as crews repaired its 150-ton cableway system. However, the dam and powerplant continued operating normally throughout the brief closure, and employees maintained access to the facility, the news release said.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience while our teams worked to protect visitor safety and resolve this issue,” said Genevieve Johnson, the bureau’s Lower Colorado Basin acting regional director, according to the news release. “Safety is always our top priority. Securing the area allowed us to thoroughly assess the situation and complete the necessary repairs while keeping the public and our crews safe.”

According to a Facebook post from the dam’s official account, public access to visit the top of the dam and pedestrian access to The Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge reopened Thursday afternoon, while all other facilities and services will reopen to visitors Friday morning.

Len Schilling, the bureau’s Lower Colorado Dams Office area manager, credited the responding crews for their work in fixing the issue, which stemmed from the dam’s cableway carriage moving unexpectedly during routine maintenance, placing stress on system components, the news release said.

“Our crews did an excellent job troubleshooting and repairing the problem,” Schilling said, according to the news release. “Once the repairs were made, we were able to safely reposition the cableway carriage. We’re pleased to welcome visitors back to Hoover Dam.”

The dam, located in Black Canyon on the Colorado River near Boulder City, is approximately 35 miles from the Strip and is a popular tourist site for visitors to Las Vegas.

The most-visited dam in the world, it hosts about 7 million visitors annually, according to the National Park Service.
