Katy Marchant is refusing to be disappointed after missing out on a medal in the individual sprint at the Commonwealth Games.
Marchant was beaten by England team-mate Sophie Capewell in the quarter-finals, less than 24 hours after the pair had combined with Rhianna Parris-Smith to win team silver at Glasgow 2026.
The 33-year-old is competing in Glasgow less than a year after giving birth to her second son, Walter, and the Leeds cyclist is determined to remind herself that simply getting to the start line is an achievement in itself.
“I promised myself I wouldn't stand here and say I'm disappointed because the last 11 months have been such a huge journey for me,” she said.
“It's one I've done before and one I understand well now. I know how important it is to trust the process because these things take time.
“I've done incredibly well to get to where I am today and to be competitive. The GB sprint programme is by far the best in the world and I train with those athletes every day. They're pushing me all the way and I'm really thankful to be part of that
"I'm disappointed with the result, but I'm also incredibly proud of who I am and where I am today.”
Marchant went toe-to-toe with Capewell, with whom she won Olympic team sprint gold at Paris 2024.
Capewell edged the first race by 0.075s before she extended her winning margin to 0.354s to complete a 2-0 victory over her team-mate.
Marchant is simply revelling in competing at her second Commonwealth Games and enjoying the journey after returning from pregnancy for the second time in her career but is no less competitive as she continues to ride at the highest level.
She added: "It's hard to remember all the time, but it's easy to get caught up in the competitiveness when you're on the track.
“You long for that feeling of winning again and I still have that hunger. That's what keeps me going every day and I'm thankful to have that feeling.
"One promise I made to myself when I came back was that when I got on the start line, I would smile.
I've seen some incredible things and had the chance to be part of some amazing experiences. Looking around here, I realise how much I've grown and that I'm still able to do this 12 or 13 years later.
“Enjoying the journey definitely helps. You have to get up every morning and put in the hard yards, so you've got to enjoy it while you can. I've always said you'll be retired for much longer than you'll be riding, so it's important to enjoy it.
"Since having Arthur, I think I've really started to understand that. Now it's something I focus on all the time. It's part of my process before a race. I remind myself that this is fun, so smile while you're doing it.
"My family have all been here watching and I want them to see me smiling as well. That's probably the main message I want them to take away: that Mum had a good time."
Marchant won team sprint bronze at Gold Coast 2018 and returned to the Commonwealth Games this year after missing the 2022 edition with the birth of her first child, Arthur.
The 33-year-old upgraded that bronze to silver on Thursday and is savouring every success far more than the rider that won bronze eight years ago.
She said: "The medals mean so much more now than they did in the early part of my career. It's difficult to explain and it's something I try to pass on to the younger girls.
“Becoming a parent, it's a different perspective on life and it's hard to understand until you've experienced it yourself.
"I hope I can be a role model to them and show that further down the line in their careers they can still achieve success.
“Success might look a little different and the way you go about it might change, but I'm still hungry for the highest level of success. Most of all, I'm proud of where I am.”
