Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13

There are four distinct but related commands for Christian living—principles that connect spiritual maturity with active resistance to compromise. These four commands are not passive suggestions, but elements of an active nature that protect our faith from ever diminishing.

Let God be your source of strength today.
Explore gentle guidance here.

Each of these four commands work together to build spiritual resilience:

  1. We must first ‘be on your guard’—spiritually alert and vigilant—in order to hear the word of God and understand His ways.
  2. Then, we must stand firm in the faith’ by having unwavering commitment to the beliefs, ideals, and truths that we are taught.
  3. It is from this foundation—awareness and devotion—that we learn to ‘be courageous’ in the face of opposition, suffering, or difficulty, and it is within moments of bravery that we discover our inner fortitude.
  4. When we arrive at a place where we ‘are strong’ in the Lord versus relying on our human strength, we come to realize that our resilience is not by our own doing, but through the faith we cultivate throughout our journeys.
Learn how to stand firm in faith.
Check out Rebecca Simon’s books.

The simple ways to live out each of these commands is through openness, prayer, and surrender. When we open our hearts to God, we find ourselves praying not for what we want, but for guidance on how to arrive at those desires. And once God delivers the guidance, whether through our intuition, an open door, or a new connection, we begin to surrender to His plan, timing, and will. It is in that process of keeping our hearts open, asking for guidance, and then surrendering to God that we live as faithful Christians, demonstrating what it means to be on guard, stand firm, be courageous, and be strong.
