Snapchat has introduced a new Now Playing feature for Snap Map, allowing users to share the music they’re listening to in real time through Spotify. The feature aims to make music discovery more social by letting friends see each other’s current tracks directly on the map.

The rollout is currently available in regions where both Snapchat and Spotify are supported. According to the company, Canada will receive the feature at a later date.

The new integration allows users to connect their Spotify account with Snapchat and display their currently playing song on Snap Map, which Snapchat says has more than 450 million monthly users.

Once Spotify is linked, users can choose who can view their listening activity by selecting one of the following privacy options:

• Friends
• Friends on the Map
• Select Friends
• No One

Friends who have permission can view the currently playing song on Snap Map and tap it to open the track in Spotify.

Tapping on a shared song offers several options, including:

• Open the song in Spotify
• Save it directly to Liked Songs
• Watch related Spotlight videos that use the same soundtrack

Snapchat also allows users to save tracks discovered through Spotlight and Sound Pages directly to their connected Spotify library.

Listening activity is only shared if the Snapchat app has been opened within the last 24 hours. If the app remains inactive beyond that period, music sharing automatically stops until the user opens Snapchat again.

Users can also pause music sharing manually for:

• 3 hours
• 24 hours
• Indefinitely

At launch, Spotify is the only supported music streaming service, although Snapchat has indicated that support for additional platforms could arrive in the future.

The new feature builds on Snapchat’s existing music ecosystem, which began with the launch of Sounds in 2020, allowing users to add licensed music to Snaps and Stories. With Now Playing, Snapchat is extending music sharing beyond content creation to real-time listening activity on Snap Map.
