Meta has announced a major leadership change at WhatsApp, appointing Kunal Shah as the new head of the messaging platform. Shah will succeed Will Cathcart, who has led WhatsApp since 2019 and will remain at Meta during the transition before moving to a new product-focused role within the company. The appointment marks one of the most significant leadership changes in WhatsApp’s history and brings an external entrepreneur to the helm of the world’s largest messaging platform.

WhatsApp CEO Kunal Shah

Kunal Shah Takes Charge of WhatsApp

Kunal Shah is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential technology entrepreneurs. He currently serves as Founder and CEO of CRED, a fintech platform focused on financial services for high-credit users and reportedly serving around 17 million monthly active users.

Before launching CRED, Shah founded FreeCharge, one of India’s early digital payments platforms that helped popularize online recharges and digital transactions before being acquired.

According to Meta, Chief Product Officer Chris Cox personally approached Shah regarding the role. The company believes his entrepreneurial mindset, product expertise, and experience scaling consumer-focused platforms will help guide WhatsApp through its next phase of growth.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, said, “Kunal Shah will join Meta as WhatsApp’s next leader. Kunal built CRED into one of India’s most important technology companies, and he brings the kind of builder mentality and global perspective that will serve him well in running the world’s biggest messaging app. I look forward to working with Kunal to continue to make WhatsApp the best service for billions of people and millions of businesses.”

Chris Cox, Chief Product Officer at Meta, said, “I’m excited to welcome Kunal Shah as WhatsApp’s next leader. He is one of India’s most respected entrepreneurs and a prolific voice for how the apps we build make a positive difference in people’s lives. We are fortunate to have him guide WhatsApp through this next era.”

New WhatsApp head Kunal Shah said, “While it’s come very far, the delta between WhatsApp today and its full potential is massive. I look forward to working with Mark, Chris, and the leadership across Meta for the next step in WhatsApp’s journey.”

Will Cathcart said, “WhatsApp is in the strongest position it’s ever been. That felt like the right moment to step back. I’m very excited to see what Kunal and our amazing team continue to build.”

India’s Growing Importance to WhatsApp

The appointment also highlights the strategic importance of India to WhatsApp’s future. India remains WhatsApp’s largest market globally and has become a key testing ground for:

  • Business messaging services
  • Digital payments
  • Customer communication tools
  • Commerce integrations
  • Utility and government services

Industry observers expect Shah’s experience in fintech and consumer internet products to play an important role in expanding WhatsApp’s payments and business ecosystem initiatives.

Looking Back at Will Cathcart’s Leadership

Will Cathcart leaves the role after overseeing one of the most transformative periods in WhatsApp’s history. During his tenure, WhatsApp achieved several major milestones:

  • Expanded to more than 3 billion users globally
  • Crossed 100 million users in the United States
  • Introduced Communities
  • Launched Channels
  • Expanded business messaging services
  • Added AI-powered features
  • Continued investments in end-to-end encryption

Cathcart also became one of the platform’s most visible advocates for user privacy, frequently defending encryption and challenging surveillance technologies, including legal action involving spyware companies such as NSO Group.

A Prominent Figure in India’s Startup Ecosystem

Outside of his operating roles, Kunal Shah has been deeply involved in the broader startup ecosystem.

His contributions include:

  • Angel investments in more than 250 startups
  • Advisor roles with Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India)
  • Board member at Pine Labs
  • Former Chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)

He is also well known for his views on product design, consumer behavior, fintech innovation, and technology-driven business models.

What Could Change Under Kunal Shah?

While Meta has not announced any immediate product changes, Shah is expected to oversee WhatsApp’s next growth phase with continued focus on:

  • Business messaging
  • WhatsApp Payments
  • Commerce integrations
  • AI-powered services
  • Utility and customer support features
  • Expansion in emerging markets

Given his background in payments and consumer products, industry watchers will be closely monitoring how WhatsApp evolves under his leadership, particularly in India, where the platform continues to play a central role in digital communication and commerce.
