The Vibrio Viewer maps conditions favourable for Vibrio growth across European seas.

The Vibrio Viewer is a near-real-time environmental suitability model that uses daily updated ocean model data to map conditions favourable for Vibrio spp. growth across European seas. Suitability is assessed based on sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity (SSS) thresholds derived from Baker-Austin et al. (Nature Climate Change 3, 73–77, 2013) and refined in Semenza et al. (2017): temperature ≥ 18 °C and salinity < 26 PSU.

Infections caused by Vibrio species other than that of “true” cholera (V. cholerae O1/O139), so called vibriosis, can also be serious, particularly for immunocompromised persons.

This version (v2) is powered by the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) hydrodynamic analysis and forecast products. The model covers five European sea domains — Baltic Sea, Atlantic-Iberian coast, NW European Shelf, Mediterranean Sea, and Black Sea — and is updated daily with a combined output of past analysis and a 5-days forward forecast.
