Star Island is a man-made island that sits in Biscayne Bay between downtown Miami and South Beach. Accessible by a single guarded bridge, Star Island contains roughly 30 homes, all of them waterfront. The properties have enormous lots, private docks, unobstructed views, and just enough distance from the mainland to make residents feel as though they have escaped Miami without actually leaving it.

In its early days (it was built in 1922), Star Island mainly attracted local business magnates. In the 1980s, mainly thanks to new residents Don Johnson and Gloria Estefan, it became a magnet for celebrities.

In December 1986, just as her career was taking off, Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan, paid $600,000 for a 12,000-square-foot Star Island mansion dating to the 1950s. The couple still owns that 2-acre estate today, and today, it's probably worth at least $80 million.

At the peak of his fame in the early 1990s, Vanilla Ice lived a few doors away from the Estefans. He paid $1.8 million for a one-acre gated estate at 15 Star Island Drive in July 1991, then spent another $1 million renovating the 9,000-square-foot, nine-bedroom mansion.

Side note: In interviews over the years, Vanilla Ice has claimed that during his time owning a home on Star Island in the 1990s, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar visited him on a number of occasions. He has claimed Pablo landed helicopters on the property, raced speedboats with him, and attended enormous parties there.

The timing of those stories is difficult to reconcile with Escobar's known movements. Escobar surrendered to Colombian authorities in June 1991, remained inside his privately designed prison until escaping in July 1992, and spent the rest of his life on the run before being killed in December 1993.

Vanilla Ice sold 15 Star Island Drive to Venezuelan businessman Claudio Osorio in May 1997 for $2.7 million. Osorio later hosted political fundraisers attended by figures including Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He and his wife filed for bankruptcy in 2011, and Osorio was arrested the following year in connection with a $40 million fraud scheme.

Anyhoo…

In 1993, Gloria and Emilio Estefan expanded their Star Island holdings by paying $1.84 million for a 1.3-acre waterfront estate at 1 Star Island Drive. This property is the subject of today's article. Gloria's mother lived there for many years, and the property became known as "Nena's Villa."

In September 2021, the Estefans sold the home for $35 million. The buyer was Sean "Diddy" Combs.

It was not actually Diddy's first Star Island purchase. He already owned the mansion directly next door at 2 Star Island Drive, having purchased that property from music executive Tommy Mottola in 2003 for approximately $14.5 million.

For the next five years, Diddy controlled two neighboring Star Island estates. According to The Real Deal, Diddy sold 1 Star Island Drive in an off-market transaction for $55 million.

Property records show that Diddy's 1 West Star Island LLC sold the estate to JFStar LLC, a Virginia-based company led by John A. Franklin. The buyer financed part of the purchase with an $18.5 million mortgage from Axos Bank. I could not immediately uncover who John A. Franklin is or how he earned his fortune. If anyone knows, please reach out!

Inside the Waterfront Estate

The property spans approximately 1.3 acres near the entrance to Star Island and includes around 240 feet of waterfront.

The nearly 8,000-square-foot compound has a two-story main residence and a separate guest house. Altogether, the estate contains six bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms, a swimming pool, a spa, and a private dock.

The original home was built in 1940 and expanded in 1995.

When Diddy purchased the estate, there was speculation that he might combine it with 2 Star Island Drive to create an enormous multi-acre compound. He ultimately kept the properties separate during his ownership.

He Still Owns the Mansion Next Door

The $55 million sale does not represent Diddy's complete departure from Star Island. He still owns his larger mansion directly next door at 2 Star Island Drive. The 1.34-acre property contains a roughly 14,000-square-foot residence with nine bedrooms and extensive waterfront access.

It was 2 Star Island Drive—not the property he just sold—that federal agents raided in March 2024.

During Diddy's ownership, this mansion became tied to some of the most disturbing allegations surrounding his private life. Prosecutors and civil accusers alleged that the property was used for drug-fueled sex parties and highly orchestrated sexual encounters involving escorts, employees, girlfriends, and guests. Some accusers alleged that women were coerced, threatened, drugged, or transported for sex.

Diddy denied the most serious accusations. At his 2025 criminal trial, a jury acquitted him of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking but convicted him on two counts of transporting people to engage in prostitution.

That mansion later became central to Diddy's attempt to secure his release from jail following his 2025 criminal trial. His attorneys proposed a $50 million bond backed partly by the home's equity. According to the filing, the property had been appraised at $48 million, and Diddy had paid off approximately $18 million in remaining mortgage debt so the house could be offered as unencumbered collateral. The judge rejected the bail proposal.

Diddy is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey. He is scheduled to be released on February 23, 2028.
