Du rap habillé de house, la première mixtape de D’Anthony Carlos alias GoldLink, The God Complex paru en 2014, intriguait vraiment. Au point que le grand Rick Rubin arrêta de tripoter sa barbe grisonnante de gourou pour décrocher son téléphone et appeler le rappeur de Washington âgé de 22 ans pour lui proposer de produire sa copie suivante ! Publié en 2015, And After That, We Didn't Talk proposait donc toujours ce fascinant alliage entre rap et dancefloor sur lequel GoldLink déployait son strorytelling très centré sur ses relations avec la gente féminine… La touche Rubin se faisait sentir au sens où aucun instant de cet enregistrement n’avait été négligé ou réalisé à la va-vite. La palette sonore était ainsi assez large, jamais monolithique, et on sentait parfois des touches de cousinage éloigné de Frank Ocean… Deux ans plus tard, D'Anthony Carlos publie ce At What Cost qu’il présente cette fois comme son véritable premier album. Toujours aussi éclectique, le rappeur de Washington impressionne tant dans le hip hop pur que dans les envolées nettement plus soul. Jazmine Sullivan avec KAYTRANADA, Ciscero, Kokayi, Wale & Radiant Children, Mya, April George, Brent Faiyaz & Shy Glizzy, Lil Dude et Steve Lacy viennent booster ce festin de groove contemporain qui s’appréhende presque comme la parfaite playlist d’un artiste doué et cultivé, une sorte de cousin germain d’Anderson .Paak.
