The personal computing affordability crisis continues in earnest, as Nvidia has announced yet another price hike for its GPUs.
According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, the company has increased the price by between 20 and 30 percent, as the extraordinary appetite for the hardware continues to build alongside the generative AI investment boom. This is the third price hike the company has implemented so far this year.
Here's Nvidia's DLSS 5 trailer.Watch on YouTubeIt's worth noting that the prior rise in cost in May only impacted high-end GPUs, such as Nvidia's 5090 series, however this time around the cost pump will affect the wider stock of Nvidia GPUs.
At the same time, Samsung is also expected to increase the price of its DRAM by around 20 percent. These price hikes are expected to have knock-on effects on PC retailers, with Taiwan's Economic Daily noting that Chinese retailers are adjusting their prices, while e-commerce platforms are becoming reluctant to sell in anticipation of further price increases. This all comes in the wake of a report from back in January, which stated Nvidia was expected to raise prices significantly through 2026. This has been proven correct over time. The generative AI boom and the consequences on component prices have also impacted console gaming, with both the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStations 5 seeing price increases this past year.
A cost of living crisis has hit the video game industry with great force, making it harder for the average enthusiast to upgrade their setups or get into the medium with a powerful computer. Whether or not we'll see these prices fall in the near future is looking less and less likely every month.
