LG's entry-level OLED is feature-rich and at a fab price.

LG is gearing up to release its new range of OLED tellies, which forces the hand of retailers to discount the current models down to excellent prices that we haven't seen in a while to clear stock in prep of the new ones arriving. For instance, it's now possible to pick one of our favourite OLED tellies, the 55-inch LG B5, up for £689 from John Lewis with code SAVELGFD010 that knocs £110 off its list price. Add code FREEDELIVERY002 to proceedings, and you'll also net free delivery. This isn't the best price this TV has ever been, but it's close to where it was for Black Friday from Very last year.

The B5 builds on the previous couple of years of optimisations that the B-series of LG OLEDs experienced that have made them compelling purchases for the price, with this new model adding small features such as a new processor and an upgrade to webOS 25 that brought smaller changes such as the ability to hide pre-installed apps and added support for 1440p/120Hz gaming. Nonetheless, you still get the benefits that the B4 brought, such as four total HDMI 2.1 ports for 4K/120Hz output, where it previously only came with two, so you can connect multiple consoles and a PC to get smooth, detailed output across whichever port you choose. This makes it ideal to pair with a living room PC downstairs, and of course, with modern games consoles. VRR (or variable refresh rate) comes in the form of both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync, while those HDMI ports also support ALLM (or auto low latency mode) to ensure the most responsive experience when gaming, too.

Of course, webOS25 also retains the handy features that the previous update added, such as having a Chromecast built-in for convenient wireless casting. The addition of a new processor brings features such as stronger upscaling for standard definition content, plus preserves the integration for the AI Sound Pro mode for stronger audio out of the built-in speakers. The in-built speakers do support Dolby Atmos for more immerisve audio in supported content out of the box, although you'll of course want to move to a soundbar at least, or a proper surround system, if you're going to be consuming a lot of Atmos or other surround-driven content. One of the HDMI ports here is eARC to allow pass-through of Atmos to a supported soundbar, such as a Sonos Beam 2, Marshall Heston 60 or otherwise - both would pair nicely with the more modest size of this LG unit and aren't too expensive, either.

The fact is though is that this is still an LG OLED, which should offer some class-leading performance with deep blacks, vibrant colours and fantastic contrast. While you don't get the benefit of an Evo panel with the B5, all of these optimisations should come together to offer a fantastic viewing experience and help to make the B5 a brilliant TV for people who want a brand new OLED for watching and engaging with all kinds of content. From personal experience, I've been very happy with the 42-inch C2 and C4 models I have here at home with their deep blacks, lovely contrast and excellent colours. I've left my C4 in Filmmaker Mode for a lot of the time, but there are varying other picture modes you can choose from. Likewise, this telly comes with vast HDR support for supported content, with Dolby Vision, HLG and HDR10 present, for added vibrancy where warranted.
