Ariana Grande has announced she is taking a break from the spotlight after her Eternal Sunshine tour ends on September 1.

Her representative told People: “Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour. She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny. This tour has been a beautiful experience for her. She loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much.”

It’s the phrase “healthily and happily”—along with the reference to “endless, ongoing public scrutiny”—that has reignited a debate that has followed Grande for more than two years.

Since she began filming Wicked, fans have frequently commented that Grande appears much thinner than she did in previous years. The discussion has become one of the most polarizing conversations surrounding the singer, with one side arguing that no one should ever comment on another person’s body, and the other insisting that visible changes in someone’s appearance can naturally lead to concern.

And the reality is that being underweight is incredibly dangerous. Someone with an underweight BMI has a 37% higher risk of dying than someone with a normal BMI. 1 in 5 people with anorexia die from complications of the disease.

In recent months, fans have noted that Ariana looks very unhealthy. Ariana herself seems to draw attention to her smaller appearance, choosing clothing and imagery that highlight her diminutive stature. Her Petal music video showed off her sternum and ribs. Her once tough-talking demeanor changed to soft-spoken and childlike.

The problem with Ariana’s statement is that her team is painting everyone with the same brush. While some people are definitely bullying Ariana for her weight and other reasons, others are genuinely concerned. The statement paints both people with the same brush — calling it “endless public scrutiny”. The statement definitely seems to be taking the stance that any comment of any kind about someone’s body is bullying.

Grande posted a clip from an interview from the Wicked: For Good press tour to her Instagram last fall in which she said comments about someone’s body are always hurtful. She said, “Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner and someone’s Granny says, ‘Oh my god, you look skinnier! What happened?’ or ‘You look heavier, what happened?…That is something that is uncomfortable and horrible no matter where it’s happening.” She also said it’s wrong to speculate what’s happening behind closed doors.

Though Grande doesn’t say it, there’s obviously a limit to staying out of it. You can not speculate about what happens in someone else’s family, but if a member of that family shows signs that they are being abused, you intervene at some point. The public thought Karen Carpenter was too thin, but no one was able to get through to her and Carpenter died from complications of anorexia nervosa in 1983. She was just 32-years-old. Ariana is now 33. We don’t want to dismiss what we are seeing with our own eyes and watch another tragedy happen.

Those questions don’t have easy answers. No one knows if Ariana Grande has an eating disorder, we just know that being underweight is unhealthy. Ultimately, Grande has made her position clear: she believes conversations about other people’s bodies are harmful, regardless of intent. Whether the public can separate genuine concern from invasive speculation remains an ongoing debate—one that is unlikely to end when her tour does.
