Christopher Nolan’s take on The Odyssey is already doing what big, culture-shifting films do best: turning a classic into a conversation starter. Even before anyone’s seen a frame, the project is everywhere – in group chats, on social feeds, and in the wider churn of pop culture where old stories get freshly minted as memes, think-pieces and must-reads.
It’s landing at the perfect moment, too. Greek myths have been enjoying a full-blown revival, with retellings and reimaginings dominating bookshelves, streaming “watch lists” and theatre stages. And as that fascination spreads beyond entertainment, it’s starting to show up in more everyday places – including the baby name charts, where parents are increasingly looking to Homeric heroes, gods and goddesses for inspiration, swapping familiar favourites for something with a little epic grandeur.
Office for National Statistics (ONS) baby name figures examined by JoJo Maman Bébé show which mythologically-inspired monikers are winning favour with modern parents.
Anne Varsanyi, head of buying at JoJo Maman Bébé, said: "Choosing a baby's name is one of the first opportunities parents have to express something about their family, whether that's honouring tradition, celebrating heritage or simply choosing a name they love.
"What's particularly fascinating about this year's data is seeing how quickly tastes can change. Some names that once filled classrooms have become increasingly rare, while others that were barely heard a generation ago are now among the country's favourites."
