Celebrity colourist Sam Cusick reveals the five blonde shades set to take over late summer

There's something about the end of summer that always makes us want to refresh our hair. For me, it’s never a dramatic colour overhaul, but rather a fresh shade update that gets rid of some of the sun-and-sea-induced brassiness, and makes me excited for the new season.

According to celebrity colourist Sam Cusick, founder of Samantha Cusick London, this season's biggest blonde trends are all about softer, more natural-looking colour that enhances your complexion rather than overpowering it.

I recently put one of her predictions to the test, opting for the salon's Model Blonde, and I don't think my colour has ever looked this good. Gone were the obvious highlights and harsh contrasts, replaced with the most beautifully blended, expensive-looking blonde that looked natural, but much, much better. It’s brighter without being bright, cooler without looking ashy, and somehow makes my hair look healthier too.

So if you want to book in for a colour upgrade of your own – and one that brings more youth and brightness to your complexion – here are the five blonde shades Sam predicts will be

everywhere this late summer...

1. Blurred Blonde

If you love low-maintenance colour, this one's for you. "It's a soft, creamy, seamlessly blended blonde where there are no harsh lines, no obvious placement," says Sam. "Think soft focus but for hair." The diffused finish grows out beautifully, making it one of the easiest blondes to maintain while still looking ‘done’.

2. Bronzed Blonde

Summer might be coming to an end next month, but your glow doesn't have to. Bronzed blonde is packed with warm golden and amber tones that mimic the effect of weeks spent in the sunshine. As Sam puts it, it's "the kind of blonde that makes you look like you've just come back from somewhere incredible, even if you haven't left London."

3. Terracotta Blonde

For anyone flirting with copper but not quite ready to commit, terracotta blonde offers the perfect middle ground. Sitting between blonde and copper, it adds warmth and depth while still feeling modern and surprisingly wearable as we head towards autumn.

4. Model Blonde

This was the shade I chose, and I can completely see why it's set to be huge. Described by Sam as "cool, effortless and deliberately undone", it creates that off-duty model effect where the colour looks organic rather than freshly highlighted. After years of chasing brighter blondes, I was surprised by how much younger and fresher this softer, blended finish made me look. It's easily the most natural blonde I've had in years.

5. Dewy Blonde

Not a colour so much as a finish, dewy blonde is all about shine. A gloss or glaze treatment adds healthy-looking luminosity that makes every blonde look fresher, richer and more expensive. If you're investing in a new colour, this is the finishing touch worth asking for.

The blonde mistakes that can add years

If you're hoping your colour will have a youth-boosting effect, Sam says there are three common mistakes to avoid…

Going too icy or overly ashy can drain warmth from the complexion, while brassiness can make blonde look tired rather than fresh. The third is a harsh line between dark roots and bright blonde lengths. Instead, opt for softer, blended colour placement that grows out naturally– it's infinitely more flattering and, as my own salon appointment proved, gives the whole look a fresher, more youthful feel.
