The district Health department has urged the public to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution against infectious diseases amid heavy rain. With waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas of the district, vigilance against leptospirosis is essential, according to a communication issued by District Medical Officer (DMO) R. Shahirsha.

“Pathogens that cause leptospirosis may be present in contaminated soil, mud and stagnant water. They can enter the body through open wounds and cause the disease, which can quickly turn fatal,” the communication said.

The DMO advised those who step into mud or stagnant water, participate in relief or clean-up operations, or engage in activities involving contact with contaminated water and soil to wear gumboots and gloves. They should also take Doxycycline tablets as prescribed by health workers.

Preventive medication for leptospirosis is available at all government health centres and hospitals. To prevent waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, jaundice and typhoid, people should maintain personal hygiene and exercise caution while consuming food and drinking water.

The department also advised the chlorination of well water. People should drink only boiled and cooled water, while those staying in relief camps should strictly follow the instructions issued by the Health department, the communication said. The public has been advised to seek immediate medical attention in case of fever, as it could be a symptom of diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue, jaundice or influenza. The department also urged people to take precautions against snakebites and seek proper medical treatment if bitten.
