While the last week’s heavy rainfall in Kerala has improved water storage in the reservoirs of the hydroelectric power projects, the rain havoc spelt heavy losses for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in terms of the damages to the power distribution network.

After a preliminary assessment, the KSEB has pegged the losses so far at ₹25.43 crore. Altogether, supply to 6,56,770 consumers were hit on account of the storms and the consequent damage to electrical installations.

The KSEB was yet to restore supply to 63,676 consumers as of Monday evening. Supply issues largely hit consumers in Pathanamthitta and Kannur districts, the KSEB said. Across the State, 2,892 distribution transformers, 2,599 low-tension electric posts and 349 high-tension posts were damaged in rain-related incidents.

Low-tension overhead lines snapped in 7,212 locations and high-tension cables in 248 locations. In waterlogged areas, as many as 233 transformers were found submerged. Steps were on to restore supply in full, the KSEB said on Monday. In the waterlogged areas, the supply will be restored after the water has receded and subject to safety protocols, it said.

Meanwhile, the steady rainfall has improved water storage in the hydel reservoirs. From a combined storage of 30% on July 25 (equivalent to 1225.7 mu), storage has jumped to 43% (1762.33 mu) on August 2, which is lower compared to the same day’s storage in 2024 and 2025 but higher than that of 2023. The reservoirs of the Idukki hydel project, Kerala’s biggest, has a storage of 40% of the capacity.

Daily consumption has plummeted, courtesy the cooler weather brought by the strengthened monsoon rainfall. From 88 mu on July 25, the consumption has dipped to 74.13 mu on August 2.
