Tucker Carlson made Megyn Kelly burst into laughter after he revealed CNN star Jake Tapper's old job working for Hooters.

Kelly played a clip on Thursday's Megyn Kelly Show showing Tapper speaking to Republican Mike Lawler and Democrat Josh Gottheimer about a bipartisan bill that would prosecute those who perpetuate antisemitism online.

'We have seen a rise of antisemitism especially on social media and a lot of it at the voice of people like Hasan Piker and Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson among others who are promoting antisemitic hate speech who continually seem to engage in long-standing antisemitic tropes and we are pushing back against it,' Lawler said.

Kelly and Carlson claimed Tapper was too timid when questioning the politicians and implied he was a hypocrite after his previous displays of support for free speech.

Kelly called the bill an 'insane resolution which is basically calling for censorship' while Carlson said it was in violation of the First Amendment.

'Your thoughts on that?' Kelly asked her fellow former Fox News host.

'It’s just amazing to see Jake Tapper abetting something like this,' Carlson said. 'I remember when he was a lobbyist for Hooters, thinking about becoming a journalist. He was literally a lobbyist for Hooters. I knew him well.'

'What?!' Kelly said, as she let out a laugh. 'Oh yeah, oh absolutely,' Carlson explained, as Kelly began to cackle. 'I did not know that,' Kelly admitted.

Tapper, 57, was a paid spokesman for the Hooters franchise in the 1990s. He worked at Powell Tate, a firm that represented the restaurant group through a federal suit that alleged discrimination from managers for not hiring men.

The restaurant's name is a double entendre for a slang term that refers to women's breasts and the sound made by its mascot, an owl. The mostly female staff are often referred to as 'Hooters Girls'.

Tapper, then in his 20s, dismissed detractors who turn their nose up at the concept in a statement to the Baltimore Sun back in 1995.

'It's honest work, the girls keep their clothes on,' he said.

Within years, Tapper would write for the Washington City Paper, where he amassed a following and got a job at Salon.com.

Columns for The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The LA Times and a talk show on CNN in the early 2000s followed. Tapper went on to work for ABC for nine years as his profile grew. He joined CNN in 2012 and is now one of the network's biggest stars.

Tapper addressed his humble beginnings during an appearance on the Dedicated podcast late last year.

'I worked for a public relations firm called Powell Tate. It was a bipartisan firm. And we worked for whatever clients we got,' Tapper said.

He added, 'I was 24, 25, and working for a PR firm to pay the rent while I figured out what I wanted to do.” 

He told the Sun in '95: 'Hooters girls are the attraction of the restaurant.'  

The paper identified him as a Hooters 'spokesman'.
