"I honestly don’t know that much about Ben besides having seen some of his movies. But I think is actually pretty cool to talk about," one Reddit user wrote. "So many liberal and left-leaning people want to pretend like they were born woke, and that just isn’t the case for most people. It’s nice to hear someone say that they were wrong, were presented with new information, and then had the introspection to change their beliefs."

"The world has evolved and then again not. The important thing is that you reflect on yourself and adapt and try to do better. At least he is questioning himself," another added, echoed by someone else who wrote: "Ben has his flaws, but I really respect when people actively introspect and try their hardest to be better versions of themselves."

"Good on him for learning, growing, and actually acknowledging/starting a conversation about this," added another user.

"Chasing Amy is a fascinating piece of both progressive and conservative ideologies blended together to make something that was both ahead of its time and looks all sorts of wrong in hindsight. On the one hand, queer people of color are given a real voice/agency. There are openly gay characters who aren’t closeted in any way, next to deeply closeted characters who aren’t even honest with themselves. And, in parts, it’s a pretty sex positive movie from the 90s. And on the other hand… it has no idea what bisexuality is, and its central story of a man who thinks he has 'flipped' a lesbian looks very silly to a modern eye," someone wrote. "And I think what [Ben] says about him wanting to revisit it now as more of an adult, but being aware that he might not be the right actor for the role, shows a lot of growth."

"It was a genuine attempt from a straight writer/director who obviously isn't homophobic to explore a topic that they obviously aren't knowledgeable about, but it was a little sweet in a 'this is so dumb' kind of way, how important it was for them to see gay characters just being themselves, etc," someone else agreed.
