The demolition of a prominent Anglesey building will start next week.

The property and clock tower have stood at the entrance to Holyhead town centre for decades.

Now Anglesey council will press on with razing the building to the ground in order to create a new green space and memorial garden at Market Street.

A council spokesperson said: "As part of the Holyhead Regeneration Programme, work will begin on Thursday 13 August 2026 to demolish a vacant building, which has stood empty on Market Street since 2016.

"Once cleared, the site will be transformed into an attractive open space with a memorial garden dedicated to those who have lost their lives at sea. The new space will provide a welcoming environment for residents and visitors while enhancing this part of the town centre.

"To ensure the safe demolition of the building, there will be a temporary road closure at the entrance to Market Street on Sunday 16 August, between 7:00am and 2:00pm. During this period, vehicles will not be able to access High Street via Market Street and signed diversions will be in place.

"The work will be undertaken by Anglesey-based contractor RG Hire Ltd.

"We apologise for any temporary inconvenience and thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while these improvements are carried out."
