People with substantial vision and hearing impairment can claim Personal Independence Payment, which may deliver up to £187 into their accounts weekly.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published the complete list of eye and ear conditions that entitle claimants to financial assistance worth up to £748 each month.
Those experiencing substantial vision and hearing impairment can claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which may deliver up to £187 into their accounts weekly.
Following April's annual benefit uprating, PIP payments increased by 3.8%. Recent figures show that over 10,000 individuals with eye and ear-related conditions are currently in receipt of support from the welfare department.
PIP does not operate as a single fixed payment. Rather, it comprises two elements determined by how a claimant's condition impacts their independence, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The daily living component covers the extra costs of managing everyday tasks. The standard rate is set at £76.55 per week, while the enhanced rate provides £114.80.
The mobility component addresses the challenges of getting around. The base rate for this component is £30.20, with an increased level of £80.10.
By qualifying for the enhanced daily living rate and a portion of the mobility support, eligible claimants can see their weekly total reach the £187 mark - totalling £748 per month.
The DWP currently identifies 59 specific eye and ear conditions as qualifying criteria, though officials emphasise that this list is not exhaustive.
Rather than a specific diagnosis, the department focuses on how the vision or hearing impairment impacts the claimant's quality of life and ability to complete daily routines.
The DWP list of eye and ear conditions that qualify for PIP is as follows:
Welfare experts suggest that anyone finding daily tasks difficult due to their eyesight or hearing should consider filing a claim, regardless of whether their specific condition is officially named in DWP guidance.
