Police were called to the area of Girard and Silk streets at 4:22 p.m. Thursday after a person called to report hearing multiple gunshots and finding a shell casing on the road, according to Tejada.

Officers responded to the scene and, while they approached an individual believed to have been involved with the incident, the person ran away, Tejada said. The individual, identified as Melvin Garcia, 18, reportedly discarded a firearm under a parked van on Silk Street before officers took him into custody, according to Tejada.

Officers recovered the firearm, a 9 mm Glock with a large-capacity magazine, Tejada said.

Detectives continued to investigate by processing the crime scene, interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area for surveillance footage, resulting in them identifying Morales as a second suspect, according to Tejada.

Morales was taken into custody at his home in Norwalk without incident, Tejada said.

Detectives also searched Morales' home and vehicles, recovering a 9 mm Taurus handgun from his pickup truck, according to Tejada.

Morales is charged with criminal possession of a firearm, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment and criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault.

Police also charged Garcia with carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine and interfering with an officer.

Tejada said both Garcia’s and Morales' bonds were set at $250,000.
