Photographer’s description: “Melting lion’s mane are the largest of the Pacific Northwest jellyfish — and one of the largest jellyfish in the world. With up to 1,200 stinging tentacles to capture prey, the tentacle can extend to 120 feet. Their red, intricate physiology is beautiful.”

Critique: “This picture looks out of this world. The contrast is spectacular between the sand and gorgeous colors on this lion’s mane jellyfish. This melting jellyfish, a term that typically refers to a beached specimen, looks like a gelatinous, red eyeball, giving it an ominous presence.”
