I’m wondering, do people vying to be Republican Party officers have to take intelligence tests, and does the person with the worst score get to run things?

I’m wondering that about the Washington state GOP’s chairman, Jim Walsh, who has joined with other Republican leaders around the country to decry the defeat of conservative, ex-reality TV star Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral primary. Walsh and his compatriots cannot believe that a right-wing candidate lost in a heavily Democratic city. They insist it proves that elections conducted with mail-in ballots are rigged to favor Democrats.

The state Republican Party has even questioned Democratic Gov. Bob Ferguson’s win over Republican Dave Reichert in 2024. Ferguson got 430,000 more votes than his GOP opponent. That is a heck of a lot of votes and, if Democrats are that proficient at rigging an election, maybe they deserve to run things.

Of course, they are not that clever. They only deserve to run the state, for good or ill, because the majority of Washington voters currently favor them over Republicans who drift further and further from coherence as they delve deeper into paranoia, conspiracy theories and worship of President Donald Trump.

Until GOP leaders return to sensibility and sanity, Republicans will continue to be losers in states like Washington and California, no matter how ballots are cast.
