The Toronto Maple Leafs announced earlier on Monday that they have hired veteran sports performance executive Andy O’Brien as the Vice President of Sport Performance.

O’Brien will lead a newly built-out department overseeing strength and conditioning, sport science, sports nutrition, injury rehabilitation, and mental performance, essentially every non-hockey-ops lever the Leafs can pull to keep their roster healthy and playing at peak level through an 82-game season and hopefully a long playoff run.

It’s a significant addition. The 48-year-old P.E.I. native brings more than 25 years in athlete performance and has been part of four Stanley Cup-winning organizations. Most recently, he was Chief Performance Officer at Cizzle Brands and Director of Sport Science, Player Health and Performance at Quartexx Management, where he ran the Junxion Performance training centers in Montreal and Toronto. Before that, he spent time with the Florida Panthers from 2021-2025 as a team consultant and the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2015-2021 as the Director of Conditioning. He holds an M.S. in Kinesiology and a B.A. in Physiology and Psychology, and for two decades has run his own High Performance Camps in Colorado and Nova Scotia, training elite athletes on the side. Most notably, O’Brien has long worked with Sidney Crosby and current Leaf John Tavares.

O’Brien isn’t coming in alone. The Leafs are building out the department around him with a full supporting staff. Dr. Craig Slaunwhite joins as Director of Health and Performance Integration, previously with the Winnipeg Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets and, most recently, the Shanghai Dragons of the KHL. Jason Martin takes over as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach after three seasons with the Penguins. Josh Crouse joins as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, most recently with the Halifax Mooseheads. And Dr. Jordan Shallow comes aboard as Human Performance Consultant, with experience across the NHL, NFL and MLB.

General manager John Chayka said the organization is “thrilled to welcome Andy and his sports performance team,” and it’s easy to see why. This isn’t a single hire so much as a wholesale investment in the infrastructure around the roster, the kind of behind-the-scenes buildout teams increasingly point to as a difference-maker over an 82-game grind. For a Leafs team that’s no stranger to postseason heartbreak, betting big on the performance side of the operation is a clear signal of where the new-look front office believes the margins are actually won.
