As the UK braces for another heatwave with temperatures set to soar to 34C, motorists are being urged to take extra care

As summer temperatures soar, drivers are being urged to stay alert, with the danger of tyre blowouts and vehicle-related problems rising during heatwaves.

Another heatwave is poised to arrive in the UK, with temperatures again expected to reach 34C.

James Harding, a tyre specialist at Blackcircles.com with more than 16 years of industry experience, said: "As temperatures rise, many drivers are unaware of how much strain summer conditions put on their vehicles. From tyre pressure fluctuations to overheating engines, small oversights can turn into major issues.

"We're encouraging all motorists to take some precautions before setting off on any summer road trip to make sure their journeys are safe and stress-free."

How to prepare your vehicle for summer driving

Check tyre pressure regularly

Warm weather can impact tyre pressure, potentially diminishing grip, accelerating wear, and heightening the danger of a blowout if tyres are over- or under-inflated. As temperatures climb, the air within your tyres expands, raising pressure by approximately 0.1–0.2 bar for every 10°C.

For the most precise reading, check tyre pressures when the tyres are cool, before driving or after the vehicle has been sitting in the shade, and always inflate them to the manufacturer's specified levels, as detailed in your owner's manual or on the fuel filler cap.

Top up fluids

Heat places additional pressure on your vehicle's engine, so it's important to routinely check oil and coolant levels, as insufficient fluid can result in overheating and mechanical failures. Motorists should also ensure their screen wash remains topped up to maintain clear visibility through bugs, dust, and pollen.

Shield yourself from sun glare

Sun glare is responsible for thousands of collisions annually, so clean your windscreen both inside and outside, replace worn wiper blades and keep a pair of sunglasses in your glovebox to enhance visibility.

Monitor your dashboard

Summer conditions can push your vehicle's systems to their limits. If any warning lights illuminate on your dashboard, particularly temperature or engine alerts, pull over safely and investigate or seek assistance before any damage escalates. If you're unfamiliar with a warning light, be sure to look it up or contact a qualified mechanic.

Check your air conditioning system

A working A/C is crucial not only for comfort but also for clearing windows, which can fog up in warm weather when humid air meets a cooler surface. Maintaining a complete field of vision is essential while driving. If your system isn't cooling properly, it may require re-gassing.

Prepare in advance for your journey

With more people venturing out on summer excursions, roads become increasingly congested, particularly around major motorways. To prevent lengthy delays and minimise the risk of stop-start traffic, which can cause engines to overheat and wear down brakes, check your route using traffic apps and aim to travel during quieter periods.
