It’s been nearly 25 years since Lexus first introduced the GX in the United States, and the recipe for this model has not changed much over time. Now in its third generation, the GX550 is a mid-size luxury SUV that is mechanically similar to the current Toyota Land Cruiser. Unlike its Toyota counterpart that comes in just two trims, there are six versions of the GX available, and we will help you decide which one is best.

Compared with its Toyota sibling, the GX offers more standard features and a larger engine, a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 with 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That’s a bit more than the Land Cruiser’s four-cylinder hybrid with 326 hp and 465 pound-feet. When shopping for a GX, we recommend sticking with the base Premium trim for $69,885, since it comes well-equipped with plenty of goodies.

Even the base trim gets heated and ventilated front seats with faux leather, a memory driver’s seat, a power steering column, ambient interior lighting, power-folding mirrors, a power liftgate, LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, a sunroof, towing equipment, a 14-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker audio system, a third-row seat, and four-wheel-drive.

If you are willing to spend $74,350 on the Premium+, it adds a 360-degree camera system, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a kick sensor for the liftgate, a wireless phone charger, a power-folding function for the third-row seat, nicer-looking wheels, and LED fog lights.

There aren’t many add-ons available for the Premium trim, so if you show restraint by getting the base model, why not go wild by getting what you want? The $350 Cold Area Package adds a windshield de-icer, headlight washers, a quicker interior heater, and a heated steering wheel. You can also add a wireless charger for $75 and a head-up display for $900.

If you value more decadent amenities, the GX’s Luxury trim level may be a better choice. This version adds massaging front seats, semi-aniline leather, and 22-inch wheels. It starts at at $82,800. That’s a sizable jump from the Premium+, but it also unlocks options such as second-row captain’s chairs ($440) and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system ($1140). The $86,350 Luxury+ adds the Mark Levinson system standard, plus a panoramic sunroof, a digital rearview mirror, power running boards, and a built-in cooler.

The Overtrail is less luxurious than the Luxury trim, but it’s also a bit cheaper at $77,530. This is the ideal version for buyers who plan to take their GX off-road, since it adds rugged goodies including the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS), crawl control, a multi-terrain monitor, an onboard air compressor, and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Like the Land Cruiser, the GX Overtrail is not available with a third-row seat. The Overtrail+ costs $84,995 and essentially combines much of the Overtrail’s toughness with the Luxury’s features. It has all the off-road equipment plus heated and ventilated massage seats, heated second-row seats, and a liftgate kick sensor.

A Toyota Land Cruiser is technically less expensive than the GX, but if you load it up with the available Premium Package, it can exceed $70,000. For around the same price, you can get the Lexus GX550 Premium with a nicer interior, a more prestigious badge, and a gutsier engine.
