Football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic has offered heartfelt words of encouragement to Australian teenager Lucas Herrington after the defender missed the decisive penalty in the Socceroos' dramatic 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 defeat to Egypt.
Australia's World Cup campaign came to an agonizing end at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where the match finished 1-1 after extra time before Egypt prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to book a historic place in the Round of 16. Herrington, just 18 years old, stepped up to take Australia's fourth penalty but was unable to convert, allowing Egypt to move within touching distance of a landmark victory.
Speaking as a pundit on Fox Sports, Ibrahimovic defended the young defender and reminded viewers that penalty shootouts often come down to fine margins.
"You're 18 years old, you're young, this is just the beginning of your career. You stepping up there showed a lot of courage. Not everybody would do that. My friend, you're the best. Don't listen to the rest.
"If you want to reach out, I'm here."
His comments quickly drew praise across the football world, with fans and pundits applauding the legendary striker for supporting a young player during one of the most difficult moments of his career. Herrington, who represents Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer, admitted the miss was painful but insisted he had no hesitation in volunteering for the penalty.
"I was confident, so it was just... I knew where I wanted to put it. I did my routine and, unfortunately, it didn't go my way."
The teenager also revealed that Australia's coaching staff immediately rallied around him after the final whistle, reminding him that one missed kick would not define his future. Despite the disappointment, Herrington's performances throughout the tournament have strengthened his reputation as one of Australia's brightest young defensive prospects.
Egypt make history with landmark victory
While Australia were left heartbroken, Egypt celebrated one of the biggest moments in the nation's football history. The Pharaohs secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory, winning the shootout after both sides remained locked at 1-1 through 120 minutes.
According to FIFA's official statistics, Egypt enjoyed 53% possession compared to Australia's 35%, completed 638 of 729 passes, and registered 14 shots, with four on target. Australia produced 16 attempts but only managed two efforts on target, despite creating several dangerous moments in open play.
Egypt also earned seven corners to Australia's four and completed 136 line breaks, narrowly edging Australia's tally of 133 during an evenly contested encounter.
The victory sends Egypt into the Round of 16, while Australia depart the tournament wondering what might have been after coming within a single successful penalty of extending their World Cup dream. For Herrington, however, Ibrahimovic's message served as a timely reminder that one missed penalty does not define a player's career, especially one that is only just beginning.
