Aryeh Lightstone: "There are no secret deals and Armenia is the landlord”

In an exclusive interview with CivilNet, Senior Advisor to the U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Missions Aryeh Lightstone discussed the first anniversary of the agreements reached at the August 8 White House summit and the next phase of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations.Lightstone also shared Washington’s vision for TRIPP as a regional platform connecting the South Caucasus to the broader Middle Corridor.Mediamax presents some fragments from the interview (subheadings are ours).“Absolutely incredible”If we were to anticipate where we are today, almost August 8th, the one year anniversary of the TRIPP summit and initialing of the accords between Azerbaijan and Armenia, we would not have been able to anticipate that this is where we would be. Not only has there been no resumption of any violence or ceasefire violations, the ways that the countries have figured out how to work together incrementally and slowly, but productively, has been absolutely and totally incredible. That is one part of what has happened.The second part is, the US used this as a moment to restart or to re-energize our bilateral relations with Azerbaijan and with Armenia. And if you look at what we've accomplished in our comprehensive strategic partnership that we have with Armenia, in the last 11 and a half months, we've accomplished more than probably the last five years combined before that.“Courage and bravery”President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan made significant commitments that required courage and bravery, where they opted for policy and peace over politics. Those are hard decisions for anybody, regardless of the type of government that they are in.You just experienced elections here. The Armenian people voted for the outcome that Prime Minister Pashinyan led them to. “Irreversible path”We're going to make sure that there's no more war in between Azerbaijan and Armenia. We are going to set the two countries on an irreversible path for peace and prosperity. Whether that path takes two months, or it takes two years, it is an irreversible path.President Trump put his name on the TRIPP - the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.President Trump does not name things in his name unless he is assured of its success and of its legacy. And this is a peace opportunity that he is assured both of its success and of his legacy.“There are no secret deals”There are no side deals. There are no secret deals. This is a public document available to literally anyone in the world.The United States partners with the Republic of Armenia for the TRIPP. I can't be a partner for something representing the United States of America without having the landlord. The landlord is the Republic of Armenia.I own real estate in many places in the world. Sometimes I'm the landlord. Sometimes I'm the tenant. The landlord has the sovereignty of that piece of land. That doesn't mean the tenant doesn't have use and rights for it. So I would have everybody be both careful about jumping to assumptions.I would also go back and read the documents very carefully. But we have been completely and totally focused on making sure that Armenia both has the sovereignty and practicality and also in reality.“You’re in a tough neighborhood”You guys are in a tough neighborhood.You just went through what I would consider challenging elections that came out with a very resounding historic win for Prime Minister Pashinyan and his party. That happened because the people are pleased with the decisions he's made.One of the decisions he's made has been to have a closer relationship with the United States of America. He's made that decision through a bunch of different calculations, and we've welcomed that with open arms.In the U.S., we are looking for strategic friends and allies who are able to take their location and say, this is not a disadvantage, but rather it's going to be a jumping-off point in order to be able to create an advantage. The Middle Corridor is going to be a critical part of that. But your tech sector is going to be another critical part of that.
