Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett presented a proposed $1.9 billion budget for next year focusing on public safety, infrastructure, and community development.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett presented the city’s proposed budget for next year Monday night, outlining a nearly $1.9 billion spending plan focused on public safety, infrastructure, responsible governance, and quality of life.
If approved, the mayor says it would mark Indianapolis’ 10th consecutive balanced budget.
“From filling potholes to preventing violence, from mowing a neighborhood park to supporting families, we continue to work,” Hogsett said.
Public safety accounts for the largest portion of the proposed budget, with about 40%, or $761 million, dedicated to initiatives including funding for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, gun violence reduction efforts, and housing for people experiencing homelessness.
The plan also includes funding for a new IMPD district headquarters on the city’s northeast side.
Another $530 million would go toward community development and infrastructure projects. That includes an update to the Department of Public Works operations garage.
“This project will result in improved storage for DPW equipment and, more importantly, enhanced working conditions that show up for our city at all hours and in all conditions,” Hogsett said.
To help cover the costs of the proposed investments, Hogsett said the city will rely in part on increases in local income taxes, stormwater fees, and property taxes.
The mayor said the proposed spending plan is designed to make investments that will strengthen Indianapolis in the years ahead.
“The budget I present to you, and it’s in that spirit, will carry Indianapolis in the years ahead,” Hogsett said.
City departments and agencies will now present their individual budgets to the specific council committees in the next two months.
The council is scheduled to vote on the final 2027 budget at its meeting on Oct. 19.
