Spotify, the music streaming platform that changed the world, turns 20 years old today. 

Since it was founded back in 2006, Spotify has quickly become the go–to site for music listening – with more than 100 million tracks to choose from.

Now, to celebrate the milestone, Spotify has revealed the most streamed artists, songs, albums, podcasts, and audiobooks in its history. 

'Drawn from years of listening across hundreds of millions of fans, these lists capture the music and stories that didn't just break through, but stayed, becoming part of everyday life around the world,' it explained. 

Topping the list of most streamed artists is Taylor Swift, who pips Bad Bunny, Drake, and The Weeknd to the post. 

However, The Weeknd leads the pack when it comes to the most streamed songs. 

His 2020 hit, Blinding Lights, is the most streamed song of all time on Spotify, ahead of 'Shape of You' by Ed Sheeran. 

Spotify was founded on 23 April 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, before launching to the public in 2008. 

In 2015 it added podcasts, before entering the audiobook market seven years later in 2022. 

Today, users can enjoy more than 100 million songs, seven million podcast titles, and 500,000 audiobooks.  

'We are the world's most popular audio streaming subscription service with 751 million users, including 290 million subscribers, in 184 markets,' Spotify explains on its website. 

To celebrate its birthday, Spotify has released its top lists for the first time – and they reveal a surprising trend. 

While many people use Spotify to listen to old classics, the top lists are almost entirely made up of new artists and tracks.

Taylor Swift is the most streamed artist of all time, followed by Bad Bunny, Drake, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran. 

Rounding out the top 10 are Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Eminem, and Kanye West.

In terms of songs, Blinding Lights by the Weeknd is the most–streamed tune. 

This is followed by Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood, Starboy by The Weeknd & Daft Punk, and As It Was by Harry Styles.

However, when it comes to podcasts, The Joe Rogan Experience is the top choice. 

This hugely popular podcast pips Gemischtes Hack, Crime Junkie, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, and Last Podcast On The Left to the post. 

Finally, in the audiobook category, Sarah J. Maas reigns supreme. 

Her hugely popular book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), dominates the list, taking spots 1, 5, 7, and 16!

The news of Spotify's 20–year anniversary has taken many users by surprise. 

Several baffled fans have flocked to X to discuss the milestone. 

'Wait what? 20 years? Didn't it start around 2011–2012?' one user asked. 

Another added: '20 years, wow. I started using this app back in 2016 and came back 2023. What a ride.'

And one joked: 'Happy 20th Spotify. 

'Thanks for knowing my personality more than my therapist.'
