An estimated 913K people initially tuned into the controversial premiere of HBO's The Idol on June 4, but the debut has now surpassed 3.6M viewers in its first week across platforms.

The first episode - titled 'Pop Tarts & Rat Tales' - of The Weeknd, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim's sexually-explicit, five-episode drama outpaced viewership for the first episodes of Euphoria (3.3M in 2019) and The White Lotus (3M in 2021).

Levinson also happens to be the creator of Euphoria, and The Idol's viewers are tracking a full 21 years younger than those who tuned into the Emmy-winning Zendaya vehicle - according to Nielsen's numbers.

A big draw for the Zoomers streaming is undoubtedly BLACKPINK's Jennie Kim, who made her acting debut (under the stage name Jennie Ruby Jane) as troubled pop star Jocelyn's (Lily-Rose Depp) back-up dancer Dyanne.

And by episode two - titled 'Double Fantasy' - Dyanne is already poised to become Jocelyn's replacement in her career and her love life with secret cult leader Tedros (The Weeknd aka Abel Tesfaye).

Grammy winner Britney Spears' struggle with fame and her 13-year conservatorship was clearly an inspiration for Jocelyn, but it's unclear if she'll be included in the final cut of The Idol after shooting her cameo over a year ago.
