A new cartoon developed by a right-wing media company has been accused of being a 'blatant Bluey knock-off' for conservatives.

The animated series, Chip Chilla, is now airing on Bentkey, a streaming app for children that was launched by right-wing media outlet The Daily Wire, founded by political commentator Ben Shapiro and film-maker Jeremy Boreing.

However, many have pointed out that the characters and settings in Chip Chilla  share a remarkable likeness to those in 'Bluey', extending to the animation style, music, colour palette and characters.

US animated series Chip Chilla started airing on Bentkey, a streaming app with programming designed for children that was launched by conservative media outlet The Daily Wire

Comparisons have been made with the popular Aussie animated series, Bluey, which airs on Disney+ in the US and UK and ABC iView in Australia

In Chip Chilla, the storyline focuses on a homeschooling family of chinchillas, while Bluey centres around the adventures of a family of cattle dogs.

Despite the differences in species, the similarities in artistic elements and themes between the two shows have not gone unnoticed.

'This cheap @OfficialBlueyTV knock-off is a bit ruff!' Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, said. 'They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. But Chip Chilla certainly proves that wrong.'

'Brisbane is so proud to be the home of Bluey, and this phony-looking US version is barking up the wrong tree! You can't beat Bluey!'

One social media user said: 'I've only seen a clip of Chip Chilla, it's like you took Bluey, cut out everything that made it good and charming, and replaced it with conservative values.'

Chip Chilla was developed by Ben Shapiro's conservative media company, The Daily Wire, and aired on the outlet's streaming app, Bentkey

'It's obviously a rip-off, and the writing is terrible, feels soulless and without heart, just a cash grab,' said another.

One user pointed out how the backgrounds in Chip Chilla 'look like they were copy-pasted from the show!'.

After watching six episodes, Guardian writer Janine Israel said: 'I can say the worst sin Chip Chilla commits is to be a bit dull, at least for this adult. If its mission is, as suspected, to take Bluey's winning formula and put a conservative wash on it, it's subtle.

Both shows feature a similar animation style, similar music, a similar colour palette, are designed for young children and are about a family of animals

In a video statement on Monday marking the launch, Boreing said: 'Bentkey isn't about teaching kids politics, it's about childhood and wonder and adventure. It's about values and all of the things on which politics are built later.'

Boreing explained the company's aim was to offer alternative children's programming to the perceived left-leaning kids shows that currently air.

'Why does it matter? It matters because kids go to school for 40 hours a week and then they engage in pop culture for 40 more hours every week.

'That means for 80 hours of a child's week, you are turning them over to the left. And good parents might spend 15 minutes a day in meaningful conversation with their kids.'

The Daily Wire, who sunk $100million into Bentkey, claims their children's shows will be free of 'divisive narratives' or 'insidious ideologies.'

The Daily Wire originally premiered a teaser for Chip Chilla that coincided with the launch of their video-on-demand service, DailyWire+, back in June 2022.

That teaser showed a more traditional animation style that appeared reminiscent of old Disney cartoons.

This was completely changed to the final Bluey-style design when the series was launched this week.

A teaser for Chip Chilla that aired back in 2022 showed a much more traditional animation style before it was changed to the Bluey-style design when the series was launched this week
