Netflix's gruesome retelling of the Jeffrey Dahmer murders continues to hit streaming records on the platform.

The 10-episode series, 'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,' has surpassed 'Squid Game' and 'Bridgerton' as the most-watched show on Netflix in its first week, as it has surpassed a half-billion views.

Created by Ryan Murphy, the show which centers on one of America's most famous serial killers - who notoriously ate his victims - has become the platform's ninth most popular English-language TV series of all time.

'Monster' debuted September 21 to an audience of 196.2 million. The show chronicles the shocking murders of 17 young men and boys at the hands of the Milwaukee killer between 1978 and 1991.

It retells the story of Dahmer from the perspective of his victims and explores major mistakes Wisconsin police made in handling the probe of the notorious mass murderer, who made national headlines for acts of cannibalism and necrophilia.

The record was previously held by another violent show, 'Squid Game.' The fictional South Korean series depicts hundreds of contestants bid for a massive sum of money through horrifying versions of playground games.

The show, starring Evan Peters, 35, features at least 10 incidents in which authorities almost took Dahmer into custody, extending his crime spree.

Peters said that he was 'scared' to take on the role due to Dahmer's horrific past, adding that he had to go to 'dark places' during filming to get into the mindset of the killer.

Richard Rushfield, a columnist for The Ankler, told Good Morning America that the show's success is derived from its violent nature.

'True crime has become a huge phenomenon across the medium,' he said. 'I think that, in tumultuous times where people feel uneasy and a lot of anxiety about their world, watching true crime helps them sort of acclimate themselves to the worst things on earth and they become accustomed to it.

'It makes the world a little less scary.'

Despite the series' record-breaking numbers, others have been critical of the show depicting the trauma that surviving victims are now having to relive.

The sister of Dahmer victim Errol Lindsey, Rita Isbell, speaking with Insider Sunday, said that Netflix never reached out to her about the series, calling it harsh and careless.

'I feel like Netflix should’ve asked if we mind or how we felt about making it,' she said. 'They didn’t ask me anything. They just did it. But I’m not money hungry, and that’s what this show is about, Netflix trying to get paid.'

'For people who are traumatized, what happens is you're hearing everyone talk about it,' said Alyssa Mairanz, owner and psychologist with Empower Your Mind Therapy.

'It's being advertised all over social media and TV, and so its interface can bring back a lot of dark emotions.'

Who is Jeffrey Dahmer?

Dahmer was convicted of 16 murders in 1992, and sentenced to 16 life sentences in prison.

He was bludgeoned to death with a metal bar in November of 1994 by Christopher Scarver, another inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin.

The gruesome story of Dahmer has past been chronicled in the 2002 movie Dahmer, in which Jeremy Renner played the titular role; as well as 2017's My Friend Dahmer, in which Ross Lynch played a teen version of the nascent serial killer.

The Akron, Ohio, home where Dahmer claimed his first victim is now valued at $372,000.

Dahmer and his family moved into the residence in 1968.

Its living room was host to the 1978 murder of Dahmer's first victim, Steven Hicks.

The then 18-year-old bludgeoned Hicks with a 10-pound dumbbell and then strangled him to death.

Musician Chris Butler bought the home for $244,500 in 2005.

'The house has a great vibe, I mean, after all, the house didn’t kill anybody, and I don’t believe in ghosts, and there’s absolutely no reason to think there’s anything untoward here,' the rocker told the Observer at the time.

The single-family home features a dual-parking garage, stainless steel appliances and a fireplace on the just-under two-acre property.

The residence has been renovated numerous times since it was first built and most recently by Butler in 2007.
