Few noughties trends have made a comeback quite like the ballet flat. A staple of the ‘It-girl’ uniform in the 2000s (think Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung in skinny jeans, oversized handbags and statement sunglasses – the model-off-duty look of the decade), the ballet pump emerged as a key shoe silhouette on the runways a few seasons ago and quickly became a staple of the street style pack.
Part of their appeal is their versatility: ballet flats look equally polished teamed with relaxed jeans and a simple white tee for running errands on the weekends, as they do paired with tailored trousers and a boxy blazer for meetings in the office. They’re also a failsafe foundation for knitted midi skirts, slinky slip dresses and floaty midi dresses.
Chanel’s two-tone ballet flats have been a staple since 1984
Chanel’s classic two-tone ballet flats, which have been a staple among the fashion set since their introduction in 1984, remain the most iconic iteration of the trend. The timeless beige-and-black design has been reinterpreted numerous times and continues to inspire versions from other luxury houses and the high street.
But the ballet flat revival is not just about heritage styles – designers are experimenting with fresh shapes and fabrics, from mesh and satin to square toes and studded details, to give them a fresh and modern look.
