The Masked Singer Australia was one of the biggest reality TV hits of 2019. 

And a spin-off show could be in the works, after U.S. network FOX announced that a new series called The Masked Dancer will screen in America. 

The show will see celebrity contestants perform unique dances while covered from head to toe in elaborate costumes.

Like The Masked Singer, the audience and judges will be tasked with guessing the identities of the mystery dancers. 

FOX will produce the show in partnership with Ellen DeGeneres, who has hosted a similar dancing segment on her daytime talk show. 

Ellen's segment - originally a parody of The Masked Singer - involves celebrity guests dancing in disguise while she and DJ Twitch try to guess their identities. 

Ellen said on Tuesday: 'This is gonna be just as fun and suspenseful as The Masked Singer, with a lot more krumping. And I cannot wait!'

'Krumping' is a style of dancing associated with hip-hop dancers and is typified by rapid movements of the arms and legs.  

While an Australian version of The Masked Dancer has not been confirmed, it's likely that Channel 10 will be interested in buying the broadcast rights. 

It's also unclear whether Osher Günsberg, who already hosts The Masked Singer on Channel 10, will be asked to front the spin-off show.  

The Masked Singer was a ratings hit last year, premiering to 1.162 million metro viewers and smashing Channel Nine's The Block in the same time slot. 

The 10-episode series reportedly cost Channel 10 more than $1million per episode.
