The swimming coach of Australian gold medalist Ariarne Titmus has hit back at sore loser Americans who slammed his enthusiastic Olympic celebrations.

Dean Boxall's theatrics made headlines across the world as Titmus stormed home to win the 200m freestyle at the Tokyo Games ahead of America's greatest-ever female swimmer Katie Ledecky. 

The long blonde haired coach stalked the pool as Titmus produced a stunning final 50m to beat Ledecky, before throwing off his mask, running through a barrier, and screaming to the heavens as he shook a metal fence.

His antics made Boxall an overnight internet sensation, but American viewers bizarrely accused him of 'toxic masculinity' and trying to steal the spotlight.

Boxall, who is beloved by all his charges, was having none of it, and like every Australian watching the Olympics was bemused that anyone would take offence.

'I heard Americans didn't like it, I heard I was over the top,' Boxall told Ben Fordham on 2GB radio.

'That wasn't over the top, that's just me. The girl beat the greatest, what am I supposed to do? Sit down and have a cup of tea?'

Titmus beat Ledecky in both the 200m and 400m freestyle, two events the American won comfortably in Rio five years ago, sending shockwaves through the American audience.

'I mean he is going crazy. Oh my goodness, haha! He's like putting on a show like Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones or something,' the commentator said as he burst through barriers and threw off his mask.

His euphoric behaviour wasn't enjoyed by everyone however, with a number of Americans taking to social media to label Boxall 'vulgar and frankly offensive'. 

'What the Australia coach did isn't funny or cute. It bigfoots a woman athlete winning a gold medal and centers the attention on him,' American author Laura Chapin tweeted.

'It's vulgar and frankly offensive and he should apologise to her and everyone else.'

Boxall, for whose coaching Titmus and her family relocated from Tasmania to Queensland, offered an alternative review of his behaviour, saying the coach 'means everything to me'.

Boxall said he was made aware of the American criticism but said he was feeling support from Aussies.

'I had people tell me: "Dean you were calm, I was worse at home. I was jumping on the couch like Tom Cruise",' he said in reference to the movie star's infamous interview with Oprah.

He said despite his group bringing home five gold medals 'I'm recognised as the person who humped the railing'.

'I went to shake it, people told me I humped it, I shaked (sic) it,' he told Fordham.

'I went to shake the railing but it was steel. I thought it was like a wrestling ring but it was steel.' 

Boxall said the celebration going viral actually made him feel more 'caged' and he specifically asked Swimming Australia if he could be in a private room so people couldn't see his antics.

'I felt more caged. It was such a blow up. People telling me I was running up and down,' he said.

'I actually asked our Australian management if I could go across to the other side of the pool, and [they] could put me in a room, so I could watch this race and I can move or run.

'They said we can't do that the TV will be on you. So I actually sat with the team and I felt caged.

'It was probably a bit of a disappointment for me that I couldn't be myself.'  

Boxall paid tribute to the great Ledecky, saying she was humble in defeat and he and Titmus enjoyed the challenge of knocking off the greatest of all time.

'Katie is the GOAT, she still is. We had a delicate plan to take her out but we got her, we're actually living it,' he said. 

'You don't just fall upon taking out the best. We had a plan to take out every day, and if we miss it, we miss it. But we got it so let's live it.'

When Titmus first turned up to training with Boxall she was 16 seconds off Ledecky in the 400m, but slowly started to chip away and after a year she had halved the gap.

'In 2016 she was 16 seconds off, by 2017 she was eight seconds off Katie. 2018 was another big break through, Commonwealth Games, she was four seconds off. By the end of the year she was 3 seconds off,' he said.

'That's when I started grabbing all the tools and started scripting and moulding and getting ready for this onslaught.'

Titmus left with two golds, a silver and bronze in her debut Olympic Games.
