Welsh swimmer Jazz Carlin has won her second silver medal of the Rio Olympics after finishing second for Great Britain in the women's 800m freestyle final.

The 25-year-old was bested by American swimmer Katie Ledecky, who shattered the world record to claim gold with a time of 8:04.79.

Carlin, who won silver in the 400m freestyle, also behind Ledecky, was able to bolster Great Britain's medal count in the pool. Hungary's Boglarka Kapas took bronze

Speaking after the race, she said: 'I could see Katie was quite far ahead and I was just trying to get stuck into the race.

'I have been feeling a bit rough over the last couple of days so to come away with another silver medal is an incredible feeling.

'I wouldn't be here without my family.

'All those early mornings where they were driving me to training and I was moody and didn't want to go.

'They have been there since the start and the hard times.

'It's nice they can be here to see me and to come away with two silver medals is amazing.

'I have finally started believing in myself.

'I have working a lot with a sports psychologist and just try to formulate a race plan and be confident.

'I have been working on that side as well and not just the physical aspect.'

Carlin's two medals come four years after she nearly quit the sport. 

The Welsh athlete made her Olympic debut after illness denied her a chance to compete at London 2012. The 25-year-old was so devastated after she failed to qualify that she considered turning her back on the pool for good. 

Carlin, a qualified nail technician and personal trainer, was always going to be bested by Katie Ledecky.

The American, who now has four golds and one silver at Rio - the same haul as Michael Phelps - shaved nearly two seconds off her own world record.
