An emotional Edoardo Molinari fought back tears after his 54th-place finish at the Genesis Championship meant he lost his DP World Tour card for 2025.

The 43-year-old needed a strong showing at the South Korean event to secure his place next season after missing five cuts in a row heading into the final tournament of the regular season. 

Molinari improved to make the weekend on this occasion but it still wasn't enough for the veteran Italian, who first turned professional in 2006. 

'It has been a bit difficult, I have not been playing very well but I gave it my best like I always do,' he said following the agonising finish.   

'It was not enough but that is golf. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Obviously there was a few guys on the bubble, very close [to losing their card]. I was a bit behind so I didn't have much pressure [at the Genesis Championship] to be honest. I needed half a miracle to keep my card.

'I think still we are very privileged and very fortunate to do what we do. Play the best courses in the world, in the best conditions in the world so I don't think you can complain too much whether you lose your card, keep your card. I think jobs have more pressure than we do.'

In January, Molinari was appointed as first vice-captain for Europe's Ryder Cup defence at Bethpage Black in 2025.

The Italian's statistical analysis played a key role in Europe regaining the trophy in Rome last year with a five-point victory over the United States at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.

Captain Luke Donald, who has never been on a losing side in five Ryder Cups as a player or skipper, said: 'Edoardo is someone I have got to know very well over the last couple of years and he's going to be a great addition again for the 2025 Ryder Cup.

'He plays a very significant role. He's around the players a lot and he works with a lot of players on their statistics as well.

Molinari went on to reveal that he will be heading to Qualifying School over the next month in a bid to regain his card, before taking a break to spend time with his family following an intense period on the road. 

'Next for me is Q-School in a couple of weeks,' he added.

'I am really looking forward to spending some time at home with my kids and my wife, I am really missing them. It has been a long year. I will go to Q-School then I am looking forward to a lot of weeks at home with them. I feel like I want to spend some more time with them.'

Molinari regained his card in both 2015 and 2016 via this route.
