European LIV Golf stars have been dealt a bitter blow as a new set of Ryder Cup qualification rules were unveiled.

As part of the new guidelines, a qualification list will be compiled based on players' performances on the US-based PGA Tour and the European-based DP World Tour.

Players can earn 3,000 qualifying points from the PGA Tour's 'Signature Events' along with The Players Championship and season-ending FedEx Cup playoffs, with the majors carrying 5,000 qualifying points.

As for the DP World Tour, the Rolex Series events offer 2,000 qualifying points, which is the same figure as PGA Tour tournaments that fall outside the 'Signature Events' bracket. 

The six best-performing players will automatically qualify for European skipper Luke Donald's 12-man Ryder Cup squad. 

But LIV events will not go towards the qualification list, dealing a considerable blow to the likes Tyrell Hatton and Jon Rahm, who played a key role in Europe's 2023 Ryder Cup triumph in Italy.

European players must be on the DP World Tour to remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection, with those on the LIV circuit forced to cough up fines and deal with suspensions to keep their spot. 

However, the duo could still play a part as Donald retained his six wildcard choices.

The drastic change was branded a 'major milestone' by European Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings.

'This is without question a much cleaner and simpler qualification system than the ones utilised in previous years,' Kinnings said.

European captain Donald added: 'A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to get to this point and everything is now focused on doing all we can to retain the trophy in New York next September.'

The new qualification process represents a significant shift from the previous guidelines.

Three players were previously able to secure a spot via strong performances on the DP World Tour while another three would qualify through world ranking points accrued in the Ryder Cup qualification window.

Europe's qualification period begins with the British Masters at The Belfry in Birmingham on 29 August.
