California leaders aim to put cap on resale ticket prices for certain venues

Дата публикации: 11-08-2026 17:19:51

California lawmakers are considering legislation limiting how much someone can charge when re-selling tickets for live events, but only for some venues.
Skyrocketing costs for live venue tickets has been an issue across the country, with many saying ticket broker tactics have forced many fans to secondary markets. Tickets on those secondary markets tend to be marked up by hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the original price.
AB 1720 aims to cap the resale cost of tickets sold at independent venues of 3,000 seats or less at no more than 10% of the ticket’s face value. The bill is currently making its way through the state legislature.
California Assemblyman Matt Haney said it’s all about fairness.
“It doesn’t go to the workers, it doesn’t go to the artists, it doesn’t go to the folks who clean the bathroom or sells the concessions or built this venue,” he said. “It goes to the scalper who is leeching off of the folks who actually made the art and did the work.”
NBC Bay Area reached out to ticket re-selling site StubHub for comment and was directed to a group called the Ticket Policy Forum. The group claims the bill “will drive ticket sellers offline when they resell their tickets, which is where fraud and scams run rampant.” The group also raised concerns about Ticketmaster and Live Nation being exempted from the legislation.
The next committee hearing for the bill is scheduled for Thursday.
