Rhian Brewster has been ruled out for the rest of the season – and is set to miss the European Championship with England’s Under 21s.

The Sheffield United striker underwent hamstring surgery earlier in the campaign and has not played since October.

Brewster has suffered complications with the problem and will not feature for the Blades for the remainder of their promotion tilt from the Championship.

It puts his participation at the Euros in serious doubt, with England boss Lee Carsley facing a dearth of options up front ahead of the tournament in Georgia and Romania.

Carsley is set to fly out to France for discussions with preferred striker Folarin Balogun over his international future.

Balogun pulled out of the recent international friendlies with a hamstring injury but is debating switching allegiances to the United States.

The USA have made no secret in their overtures to the Arsenal front man, currently on loan at Reims in Ligue 1.

Carsley will need to know Balogun’s thoughts quickly as England plan for then Euros. Cameron Archer, who has six goals in 10 starts on loan at Middlesbrough, was the only natural No 9 in the las squad.

Liverpool’s Curtis Jones was utilised as a false nine off the bench during a 4-0 win over France, while he started the defeat by Croatia in that position.
