СпутникиРНSpaceXРоскосмосNASAA 26-year-old political newcomer with ties to the Trump cabinet beat four rivals on Aug. 11 to claim the Republican nomination in Wisconsin's open 7th Congressional District seat.
Wisconsin 7th District Republican primary winner Michael Alfonso, 26, is seeking an open seat in the November election to replace his father-in-law, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The Associated Press declared the race for Alfonso, who will now be up against Democrat Fred Clark in the Nov. 3 general election.
Alfonso is a political neophyte whose campaign is focused on conservatives' concerns like immigration, "personal freedoms" and affordability. He has said that he is too young and inexperienced in politics to be barred from voting.
Alfonso is married to Evita Duffy-Alfonso, the daughter of Sean Duffy and Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy. Before he departed from Congress in 2019, Duffy was the representative for Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District.
According to Alfonso's campaign biography, he worked in the construction and concrete industry before becoming a producer for The Dan Bongino Show. Local reporting has also documented his construction work and his move to Florida while working for Bongino, before he returned to Wisconsin.
Trump's Endorsement Was Central to the RacePresident Donald Trump vowed to support Alfonso in a Jan. 27 Truth Social posting as a "MAGA Warrior" and a "young STAR. He also mentioned Alfonso's relationship with Duffy and that he had his "Complete and Total Endorsement."
Alfonso repeatedly pointed to Trump's support during the campaign. After winning the primary, he said the district's history of voting for Trump was evidence that Republican voters wanted candidates aligned with the president.
Trump's endorsement arrived as Alfonso was contending with some veteran Republicans such as former Iran hostage and former U.S. Marine Kevin Hermening and Jessi Ebben.
Sean Duffy's Family and Financial SupportDuffy played a significant role in Alfonso's electoral bid. The former congressman ran with his son-in-law and donated a million dollars from his old congressional campaign committee to a super PAC working for Alfonso, Wisconsin outlets reported in reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The financial support became a major point of criticism during the Republican primary, with opponents arguing that Alfonso's family connections gave him an advantage over other candidates.
Alfonso's supporters, meanwhile, argued that his campaign had earned backing because of his conservative positions and appeal to younger voters. Alfonso has rejected the argument that his family connections should disqualify him from seeking office.
Why Alfonso Faced a Contentious PrimaryThe Republican primary featured criticism over Alfonso's relative lack of political experience and his connections to Duffy and Trump.
Rivals also pilloried Alfonso for his absence from a previous GOP debate to attend a fundraiser in Washington. Later, Alfonso joined the other top Republican contenders in a televised debate, which Wisconsin Examiner covered.
Alfonso defended his candidacy by arguing that voters should judge him on his values and ability to represent the district rather than his age.
"I think it'd be great to have someone who knows how to put on a pair of jeans and a pair of boots and a hard hat and work his butt off 12 hours a day," Duffy said during the campaign, according to NewsNation reporting cited by local Wisconsin coverage.
The Open Seat in Wisconsin's 7th DistrictThe Republican primary became competitive after Rep. Tom Tiffany announced that he would leave the House to run for governor of Wisconsin.
Tiffany first won the 7th District in a 2020 special election and was reelected in 2020, 2022 and 2024. The district, which covers a large portion of northern and northwestern Wisconsin, has been represented by Republicans since 2011.
That history makes the Republican nomination particularly significant. The winner of the GOP primary was positioned to enter the general election with the advantage of running in a district that has consistently favored Republican candidates.
Who Will Michael Alfonso Face in November?Alfonso will face Democrat Fred Clark in the Nov. 3 general election.
Clark is a former Wisconsin state legislator, forester and business owner from Bayfield. He has said he wants to represent a "new Democratic Party" focused on working people and has criticized Trump's positions on tariffs, foreign policy and environmental issues.
For Alfonso, the general election will provide a different test from the Republican primary. His campaign will have to maintain the support that carried him through the GOP contest while appealing to voters beyond the Republican base.
If elected, Alfonso would be among the youngest members of Congress at 26.
The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
