Norway's wealth fund earned a record $184 billion in H1 2026 as tech stocks drove returns, while its SpaceX stake and SEC climate fight gained attention.
Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, posted a record 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns ($184.3 billion) profit in the first half of 2026, driven primarily by strong equity-market returns, particularly in technology stocks.
The fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), was worth about $2.3 trillion at the end of June. NBIM said the gains were led by strong returns in Asian technology stocks.
The result came after the fund lost 636 billion crowns in the first quarter, equivalent to about $68.4 billion, when global equities were hit by the Middle East conflict. The first-half result therefore reflects a sharp recovery in the second quarter.
Nvidia, Apple and Alphabet Lead the Technology Portfolio
The fund's holdings show the scale of its exposure to the global technology sector. As of June 30, it held a 1.28% stake in Nvidia worth about $62 billion, a 1.24% Apple stake worth $52 billion and a 1.17% Alphabet stake worth $50 billion, according to NBIM's holdings data cited by Reuters.
Its other major technology positions included a 1.27% stake in Microsoft worth about $35 billion and a 1.7% holding in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. worth about $34 billion. The fund held investments across approximately 7,100 companies worldwide.
NBIM says it owns an average of about 1.5% of all listed companies globally, making the Norwegian fund one of the largest institutional shareholders across international equity markets.
SpaceX Stake Adds Private-Market Exposure
The fund disclosed for the first time that it held a 0.05% stake in SpaceX valued at $1.22 billion as of June 30. The investment appeared in NBIM's updated holdings following SpaceX's public listing in June, according to Reuters.
The SpaceX position is small relative to the fund's largest technology holdings, but its disclosure marks an expansion of the portfolio into a company that had previously been privately held. Reuters reported in April that NBIM had been assessing whether SpaceX could be an investment opportunity.
The fund also invests in property and renewable-energy projects, alongside its listed equity and fixed-income portfolios. NBIM's investment mandate requires it to seek the highest possible return with acceptable risk.
Tangen Warns the Fund Could Still Lose Everything
The record profit has not changed NBIM chief executive Nicolai Tangen's assessment of extreme market risk. On Aug. 11, he said the fund could theoretically lose its entire value if global financial markets experienced a severe enough collapse.
Tangen said the fund had grown rapidly during what he described as an unusual period characterized by relatively low inflation, interest rates and taxes. He also compared some features of the current environment, including tariffs, with conditions preceding the 1929 Great Depression, while acknowledging that companies have become more resilient through stronger supply chains and backup systems.
The warning contrasts with the fund's first-half performance. Despite geopolitical tensions and trade barriers, Tangen said markets had continued to rise and that the global economy had proved more resilient than he would have expected under similar conditions in earlier periods.
Climate Disclosure Fight Needs a More Precise Reading
NBIM has a long-standing position supporting standardized climate-related corporate disclosures. It told the SEC in 2021 and 2022 that investors need consistent, comparable and reliable information about financially material climate risks and opportunities.
However, the specific claim that NBIM filed an Aug. 7, 2026 objection to an SEC proposal eliminating mandatory climate disclosures is not supported by the current NBIM consultation record I could verify. NBIM's published 2026 SEC submission dated July 6 concerns a proposal allowing companies to report semiannually instead of quarterly; its 2026 consultation archive does not list a new SEC climate-disclosure submission.
NBIM's broader climate-disclosure position is nevertheless clear. In its 2022 SEC submission, the fund said climate change can create transition and physical risks affecting long-term investment returns and supported standardized disclosure requirements for financially material climate information.
Oil Wealth Has Become a Global Equity Portfolio
The GPFG was created to invest Norway's petroleum revenues outside the domestic economy and preserve that wealth for future generations. NBIM says the fund is invested exclusively outside Norway to shield the domestic economy from the effects of large petroleum revenues.
That structure has transformed oil and gas income into a globally diversified financial portfolio. The fund's exposure now spans thousands of companies, government and corporate bonds, real estate and renewable infrastructure.
The $184.3 billion first-half profit, the newly disclosed $1.22 billion SpaceX stake and the fund's continuing engagement on corporate disclosure illustrate the scale of Norway's position in global capital markets. The immediate gain is substantial, but Tangen's warning makes the underlying message equally clear: a portfolio of this size remains exposed to the same global market shocks that created its record wealth.
