A space rock that smashed through the roof of a house in New Jersey has been found to contain something quite unexpected.

Back on July 16th, 2024, a meteorite blazed across the skies of New York City.

Shortly afterward, it broke into pieces and one of those pieces ended up smashing through the roof of a house in Hillsborough, New Jersey.

Now, following a detailed analysis of the fragment, researchers have revealed that the remarkable space rock contains traces of ancient salts and organic compounds considered essential for life.

"A forensic study of the fragments revealed that they contained preserved bits from near the surface of a primitive asteroid where it experienced concentrated salty fluids - a process not previously known from this type of protoplanet world," wrote lead study author Peter Jenniskens.

Incredibly, the homeowner had been in at the time of the original impact.

"I was at home at the time, heard a loud crash, and found a hole in the ceiling of the master bedroom," he recalled. "I smelled a strong sulfur-like odor and saw many black fragments along with debris and black dust that covered my bed, carpet, and surrounding areas."

Because he chose not to touch the pieces, he actually helped to avoid contamination, making a proper analysis of the fragment possible.

"Thanks to the homeowner's quick reaction, these are the most pristine CM1/2 meteorites we know of," said Jenniskens.

The strange incident, which fortunately didn't cause any injuries, is now helping scientists to learn more about how primitive asteroids carried the ingredients necessary for life to develop.
