Copa Holdings, the parent company of Copa Airlines, reported a halving of its profit in the second quarter of 2026, but the Panama-based carrier maintained its position as the primary airline link between Jamaica and Latin America.

The quarter reflected “the resilience of the company’s business model and disciplined execution amid a significantly higher jet fuel price environment”, the company stated in its earnings filing.

The quarter was affected by rising oil prices stemming from the US-Israel attacks on Iran and the subsequent blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for roughly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply.

Net profit dropped 53.9 per cent to US$68.2 million, or US$1.67 per share. The margin compression reflected the pace of fleet expansion – Copa took delivery of four Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft during the quarter, ending June with 131 planes – and the cost of filling additional seats, with load factor slipping slightly to 86.7 per cent from 87.3 per cent.

Copa reported operating revenue of US$1.1 billion for the quarter, up 25.7 per cent year-on-year, as the airline expanded capacity by 16.5 per cent and lifted passenger yields 8.7 per cent to 12.6 US cents per mile. But the top-line growth came at a cost: operating profit fell to US$91.7 million, an 8.7 per cent margin that was 13.1 percentage points narrower than the same period last year.

Copa (NYSE: CPA) operates the Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, connecting Kingston and Montego Bay to dozens of destinations across Central and South America. The airline’s regional connectivity is increasingly important to Jamaica’s tourism diversification strategy: visitor arrivals from Latin America are up 25 per cent year-to-date, making the region the island’s fastest-growing source market.

Jamaica has identified Latin American airlift as strategic to diversifying traffic away from its traditional North American base.

Copa’s hub model – which channels traffic from smaller Caribbean and Latin American cities through Panama – gives it a structural advantage over point-to-point carriers in serving routes that lack sufficient demand for direct service. For Jamaica, the airline effectively functions as a gateway to markets including Colombia, Peru, Brazil and Argentina.

The airline maintained tight cost discipline outside of fuel, with ex-fuel cost per available seat mile holding flat at 5.7 US cents. Copa ended the quarter with approximately US$1.5 billion in cash and investments, representing 39 per cent of trailing twelve-month revenues, and a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 0.9 times.
