Becky G sees Karol G as a close friend, no matter if people try to pit them against one another.

The “Shower” singer joined Gayle King on CBS Mornings for an interview that is slated to air on Thursday (Aug. 13). In a clip shared exclusively with Billboard on Wednesday (Aug. 12), the two had a heart-to-heart about womanhood in the entertainment industry, where Becky speaks candidly about her relationship with the Colombian singer-songwriter.

Becky — who is one of Karol’s opening acts on the Viajando por el Mundo Tropitour, reflects on her friendship with the Grammy-winning artist who was named Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2024. Over the years, the two performers have shared the stage multiple times, including during Karol’s Coachella performance in April.

“People went crazy when you came out on the stage,” noted King.

Becky replied, “It was so fun … So fun that now we’re going on tour together!”

The singer told the TV personality that the plans arose from their close bond beyond the stage. 

“We have a beautiful friendship, one I’m really, really thankful for, and one that I think throughout the years, we’ve really earned with one another,” Becky explained. “I think that’s for many, many reasons … through experiences, shared experiences, individual experiences and, of course, an industry that is so quick to pit people against each other.”

King then asked Becky whether there was any rivalry. “People would think you would be competitors,” the journalist said to Becky. “You don’t see yourselves as that?”

“Absolutely not. No,” the singer insisted. “I mean, for me, personally, my greatest competition is the person I look at in the mirror every morning, you know? And I know she feels the same way for herself. Our goal is to be the best versions of ourselves, and it’s been beautiful to kind of grow up in this friendship as well, and see someone literally just not only break down every door, but also hold it open for others to come through.”

“It’s a rule that was made with not having us in mind,” Becky later added about the industry’s pattern of pitting women against each other and leaving room at the table for only one of them. “I think that the coolest part about becoming, you know, the women that we are in the industry today is that we’ve realized we can build our own tables.”

The two singers first appeared together on a song in 2018 when they were part of Mau y Ricky’s remix of “Mi Mala.” In 2022, they joined forces and released “MAMIII,” which reached No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs chart dated Feb. 26, 2022, earning Becky her first No. 1 and Karol her fourth on the tally. “MAMIII” simultaneously topped six separate Latin tracking charts at its peak in March 2022, a feat that was last achieved nearly three years before by Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma.”

Becky — along with Elena Rose and Greeicy — has opened for some of Karol’s tour dates, which kicked off on July 24. Becky’s first show on the tour was July 29 at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium, and she has continued to join the “Tropicoqueta” singer in other major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Becky’s final opening show on the tour takes place on Sept. 18 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
