Talent shortages on both sides of workplace safety are creating mounting risk for employers and workers alike. About two-thirds of organizations struggle to recruit or retain occupational and environmental health and safety staff. At the same time, labor gaps across operations increase workloads, fatigue and the likelihood of incidents.

As safety teams shrink, visibility declines. Even experienced professionals cannot observe every task, identify every hazard or intervene in every unsafe act. Nearly 4 in 10 EHS professionals say they miss early risk signals that could help prevent incidents.

Connected safety technologies offer a way forward. Tools such as wearables, IoT-enabled monitoring and real-time analytics help lean teams identify hazards faster, prioritize action and mitigate risk before incidents occur.

Understanding the Visibility Gap

Most organizations rely on established safety programs built on training, audits, inspections and incident reporting. These practices remain essential, but they have limits when exclusively relying on human (manual) programming, updates, and ongoing updates.

Traditional approaches depend on people being present to observe work, identify hazards and act. The data they produce captures only moments in time, leaving blind spots in day-to-day operations. Manual reporting adds another challenge: It often falls short under operational pressure. Today, 9 in 10 EHS professionals say incidents, hazards and near misses go underreported.

The result: an incomplete, or outdated, picture of workplace risk.

At the same time, operations are growing more complex. Facilities are larger. Workforces are more fluid, often blending full-time employees, contractors and temporary labor. Many organizations onboard new workers more frequently, increasing the risk of inconsistent training, weak hazard recognition and uneven compliance.

Even fully staffed teams cannot monitor every task or behavior. Lean teams face an even steeper challenge.

Connected safety technologies help close many of these gaps. By continuously collecting and analyzing safety data, they give teams deeper insight into worker behavior, equipment use and environmental conditions. Teams can shift from reactive reporting to proactive risk management, detecting issues earlier and acting faster.
