Somewhere in your facility (or one like it), a worker has donned a respirator during hundreds of shifts. Recently, his wife has noticed that his cough has worsened. His breath has grown shorter on walks that would have never winded him before.
He passed his annual fit tests as required, but a gap has left him vulnerable – and sick. Over time, like clockwork, his respirator became uncomfortable, and adjustments compromised the seal. Shift after shift, a small amount of particulate accumulated in his lungs. No incident report was filed. No near miss was documented. Only after a recent visit to the doctor did he understand his lungs suffered irreversible damage.
The silent failure in a respiratory protection program begins the moment a worker like him starts a shift with a respirator that does not seal. This failure compounds with every shift that follows. And his health suffers. And so does his family.
Across industries, a gap exists between organizations that complete fit testing and organizations that run strong respiratory protection programs. That gap deserves attention, but the story rarely gets told because it is a far cry from the workplace tragedies we’re subjected to.
Since 2000, work-related deaths have increased by 12%. A staggering 2.93 million people lost their lives in 2019 either at or from their workplace. The rise in fatalities deserves our pause and action.
The workforce has grown significantly in the last 25 years, naturally correlating to a rise in death rates. Even so, instances of unprotected exposure to occupational risks are on the rise.
According to the International Labor Organization, only 330,000 deaths were the result of workplace accidents, while the remaining 2.6 million were attributed to chronic work-related diseases. Simply put, workers have a much greater risk of dying from disease than they do from an accidental event.
In 2019 alone, 2.6 million people died because of work-related health conditions. Exposure can cause terrible diseases, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and/or cardiovascular diseases. These conditions are painful, slow, and costly for both the worker and their family. (ILO, 2019; WHO/ILO Joint Estimates).
Respiratory illnesses and cancers can come from exposures that build quietly over time. Dust is inhaled during hundreds of shifts. Chemical vapors absorbed over the years. Fine particulate matter settles into lung tissue over time. These events happen so gradually that symptoms likely won’t surface for a decade or more.
